Should you choose Squarespace for your website?

Website design for small, service-based businesses

Here at City & Sea Creative, we specialize in both Squarespace and Shopify website design, but because most of our clients are service-based, we use Squarespace much more often. While Shopify is best for eCommerce brands, Squarespace is more appropriate for service-based brands, creative businesses, coaches, photographers, etc. that need a landing pad to showcase their work, tell their brand story, and highlight their services and pricing.

Oftentimes, businesses choose Wordpress for the website design platform. While Wordpress is great for blogs and SEO strategy, it can be pretty difficult for business owners to make subtle changes to the back-end of the websites without having to ask for professional help. So many of our clients come to us from Wordpress because they keep attempting to make edits, delete a piece of code, and totally mess up the entire look and feel of their website (yikes!) With Squarespace, you can pretty much guarantee that won’t be an issue.

Here’s the full breakdown on why we recommend Squarespace for small business:

Here’s why we recommend Squarespace for small, service-based businesses

01. It’s user-friendly

We’re happy to help our clients with small edits after we transfer final ownership of their website and their project is complete, but with Squarespace, we usually don’t have to. Squarespace makes it so easy (especially compared to platforms like Wordpress) for anyone to replace text, photos, add content, and more.

Here’s a screenshot from a clients’ Squarespace editor. You can see here that when you click into a text box, you can easily highlight and rewrite the text. You can also change the text style, spacing, alignment, you name it, with just a click of a button. The best part? You can see your changes instantly without having to hit refresh or view a preview.

02. It’s customizable

Squarespace offers very well-designed templates— but we usually just start from scratch. Unlike other platforms, you’re not forced to drop content in sections or columns with Squarespace. You can place an image or text or shape anywhere on the page to create a totally custom feel. The possibilities are (almost) endless. We do add custom CSS to take the customization a step further, in most cases. For example, Squarespace doesn’t allow for vertical text. In this case, we create a custom text box and add in the vertical text where we want it.

While we often start from scratch when building pages and sections, Squarespace has beautifully designed templates so users can easily add a new section and customize it.

03. It’s versatile

While we recommend Shopify for my eCommerce clients, Squarespace does have eCommerce capabilities for small catalogs. And while Wordpress is the powerhouse for SEO blog sites, you can still boost your SEO with Squarespace. We’ve built Squarespace sites for dog groomers, florists, personal trainers, healthcare providers, photographers, design portfolios… you name it. It’s absolutely our go to!
